Review
Resident Evil 5, the most recent installment in the popular Resident Evil series, which is highly anticipated by fans of the franchise does not disappoint. Resident Evil 4 strayed from the RE formula by introducing players to a more action filled game. Returning to the original storyline of the first 3 Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 5 takes the action a step further by introducing cooperative game play into the mix.
The plot line involves Chris Redfield, a former S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team member, who is an agent for the B.S.A.A. traveling through a fictional country in Africa to foil the plans of terrorists with a biological weapon; Redfield faces violence at every turn with his new partner, Sheva Alomar. Together they face hordes of mutated zombies and infected inhabitants. This sounds more exciting than it plays. Unless you are a hardcore Resident Evil fan, you may find the story predictable and anemic.
Game play continues to be in the third person as in Resident Evil 4. The pace is slow and methodical, not continuous action, but this does not mean that it isn't engaging, just not fast-paced. A surplus of weapons is available, but as in previous versions you cannot fire while in motion. This can be frustrating in high action sequences as it requires you to depend on your partner, Sheva.
The huge alteration in Resident Evil 5 is the cooperative play option. This option can be implemented in two ways: Sheva can be controlled by a friend or by the AI. A friend may control Sheva either via your PS3 or online. Online play offers multi player choices with random players or invited friends. This makes game play much more exciting and appealing as you move through the action. If you choose to use the computer option, be aware that computer-controlled Sheva may not do things as you would like. You will end up doing the majority of the work with Sheva sometimes wasting ammo and playing a minor supporting role. The difficulty of some levels without a human partner controlling Sheva may seem insurmountable.
Detailed graphics and the ability to play with a partner are the strengths of Resident Evil 5. The main weaknesses are the slower pace and inability to fire weapons while moving. Fans of the franchise will not be disappointed and those new to RE will find the experience uniquely captivating.
