Gears of War, a franchise exclusive to Xbox 360, is considered by many gamers to be an essential third person shooter game. Will the second installment meet the same rave reviews as the first?

Controls and many weapons remain unchanged in this version of Gears of War - welcome information for those new to the game as well as fans of the previous one. Instead of trying to figure out how to control moves, the ease of play allows more time to concentrate on the battles. While moves remain the same, there are plenty of new features to keep gamers busy. Creatures formerly relegated to minor roles are now part of the starting lineup and Horde attack. Cool new Locusts are amazing as well. There are tons of new surprises and enemies that increase as you proceed through the game.

Longer chapters with tons of variety keep the action moving at a fast pace. There are a few new features available, including not dying automatically when you get hit. Rather than being dead, you may just be injured and able to move to safety to regain health. Another new feature is the ability to use your enemy as cover and execute them in attention-grabbing new ways.

The action is well paced with an involving story that allows you to understand the characters better. The multiplayer option is well done online and off. Cooperative play is available online (with eight match types) or on a single console.
Visuals are fantastic, especially if you have an HD setup. The characters, backgrounds, and effects are all stunning. Sound effects are very satisfying. The sounds of the wind howling and bullet casings hitting concrete are all clear and augments gameplay. The soundtrack is well done and again enhances the onscreen action.

All in all, Gears of War 2 is a perfect sequel to its predecessor. It lives up to the hype surrounding its release… and then some.
