SmackDown vs. Raw’s Wii debut last year disappointed fans looking for an amazing wresting game. Will players see improvement in this installment?
The single player modes are greatly improved. The Main Event has been replaced by Career mode and the Road to Wrestlemania. In Career mode, you choose your superstar and make your way towards the title belt. Fighting through the five opponents in your bracket will earn stars towards a shot at the title. Stars are earned through match results, technical, and excitement. You can also earn awards for idiosyncratic moves like hitting your opponent with a plank or having 35 hits in a row. The Career mode is a long mode, with constant action which leads to the Create a Superstar mode where you continue to battle for belts.
Road to Wrestlemania, the other single player mode, has six story lines that allow you to play as WWE stars fighting their way to Wrestlemania. Cut scenes of WWE action are scattered throughout the mode, which will surely appeal to WWE fans.
Artificial Intelligence in single player modes is much more active. Computer controlled opponents will instigate attacks and initiate tagging partners. This is much improved from previous versions, where AI seemed brainless and reactionary.
Online play provides tons of competition. Use SmackDown, Raw, ECW, or individually created superstars to fight in any match that supports 1-4 players.
Execute punches and kicks by flicking the Wii remote. Performing the flicks while holding A will trigger a simple grapple move. B and flick will make a strong grapple. On screen prompts will pop up to help you execute different moves throughout the match. Motion sensitive controls make game play more fun, particularly when lifting an opponent and smashing him to the floor. Tons of new match types and cool additions to the arsenal under the mat really enhance this game.
The Create a Superstar tool allows you to create your star with whatever attributes you want. You can then customize their fighting style and ring entrance moves to individualize your superstar.
Ultimately, Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 offers necessary upgrades to the franchise, allowing gamers to access new levels of play and additions needed to ramp up the action.
