Review
The Wii has completely abandoned the usual action game pattern for Deadly Creatures. Instead of a gun-wielding soldier or action hero, in this game you control a couple of scary insects: A tarantula and a scorpion.
The two human characters, Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Hopper, are voiced by the actors for which they are named. Billy Bob voices the introductory scenes and sets the tone for the game. Creepy, mysterious, and anxious are the words that come to mind in describing the scenario. The storyline unfolds as you investigate via tarantula to find out exactly what is going on. The coolest thing is the way the story is integrated into game play rather than via cut scenes. This really keeps things moving, and immersion in the game is enhanced. While interactions between the creepy creatures and the suspicious humans are limited – really only truly interacting in the final scenes, the game remains engaging throughout.
Audio and visual qualities are equally impressive. The peculiar soundtrack complements the atmosphere perfectly. Details in the characters are incredible – the reflections in the insect’s shell or the hairs on the spider’s legs – all adding to the experience. The motion of the insects is truly cringe-worthy if you are at all nervous around bugs. Texture and setting design are beautifully rendered.
Ten chapters are comprised of exploration, action, and battle split between tarantula and scorpion. While touring the stage you can collect some of the grubs hiding throughout. Grubs allow you to unlock art, interviews and other extras. Both insects acquire new attacks as the game progresses, allowing for new skills and tools for use during play. This also allows them to return to previously completed levels and utilize their new skills to explore areas that they were unable to reach. Be warned that these are not cute Disneyfied bugs! The fights can be bloody and gruesome.
If you are looking for something that is completely different in the action/adventure genre, Deadly Creatures is it. With fantastic graphics and superb audio, this one-of-a-kind game will drive you buggy!
