Gamers fondly think of Banjo-Kazooie as a game full of running across huge worlds collecting objects. With Nuts & Bolts, gameplay ramps it up with a vehicle creation tool and new twists sure to delight fans.
The story involves a lazy Banjo, out of shape after defeating Gruntilda… and Gruntilda is reduced to merely a grumpy head. The Lord of Games proposes a competition in which Banjo travels through 6 worlds outfitted with a vehicle-creating wrench with Gruntilda trying to stop him. The prize? The deed to Spiral Mountain.
Each world is enormous and players will enjoy exploring the vast spaces. Jiggies are back as the prize for mission completion and for opening new worlds. But in this version of Banjo-Kazooie the hunt for objects is significantly reduced and is replaced with several missions. Collecting musical notes to use as currency to buy vehicle parts is part of play, but you can earn parts just by playing so this is completely optional. The main point is to earn jiggies to keep things moving.
Your vehicle is crucial because Banjo is so out of shape. Making full use of your building tool is the only way to successfully complete tasks. The only condition set for your vehicle is that Banjo must have a place to sit. Vehicles can be anything from a tank to a plane with an infinite number of options. Easily choose your features, put them together, test them on the track, and then get back to your mission. The big trick is to remember that your vehicle will be subject to physics. If it isn’t properly balanced, you could be in big trouble.
Visual effects are very well done. The worlds are large with brightly colored landscapes and intricate details. The music features a great soundtrack with some remixed tracks from previous games. Each world has its own music that changes as you travel around.
Multiplayer mode allows up to 8 players.
Imagine showing your friends the crazy vehicle you’ve created! You can also share blueprints online, giving and receiving tips to make vehicles more effective in challenges. Thrilling competitions across six worlds are fast paced and engaging. The feature that is probably the most fun is the ability to rewind time. By holding the back button, you can back up and re-do a missed turn or crash.
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is the perfect addition to the franchise. With the vehicle creation tool and mission based formula (rather than item collection), Nuts & Bolts is just what Banjo-Kazooie fans have been waiting for.
